Zheng Chongbin (b. 1961) is a Chinese artist who explores the intersections between Chinese ink and calligraphic traditions and Western abstract painting. He often paints with ink or acrylic on paper, and has notably worked with Xuan paper, which for over 1000 years has been the preferred material for calligraphic ink painting. He fuses seemingly divergent artistic lineages in his work, mixing the contemporary and antiquated in Asian ink art. Zheng's distinctive practice reconsiders materiality, canvas, and gesture, thus revealing how techniques of traditional Asian ink painting can have contemporary relevance. Having studied and split his time between China and the U.S., Zheng infuses the influences of both places and artistic traditions in his work. His work can be seen in the collections of the British Museum, Los Angeles Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and M+ Museum, among others.
